چکیده

The study of premixed laminar flames is a central question in combustion theory. Here the differential equations describing steady flame propagation are investigated mathematically. The emphasis is on analytic results, hence a simple model, a onestep exothermic reaction with linear or radiative heat loss is studied. The equations governing our model can be considered as travelling wave equations, where the unknowns are the fuel and temperature profiles and the flame velocity. The main parameters of the system are the Lewis number (ratio of thermal to mass diffusivity), the activation energy and the heat loss parameter. How the number, velocity and stability of travelling wave solutions change as the parameters are varied is studied. Much is already known about the change of planar flame velocity. The heat loss parameter – flame velocity curve has a turning point, obtained previously theoretically, by asymptotic expansions for large activation energy as well as numerically. For Lewis numbers close to unity the upper branch of the curve gives stable flames, the lower branch unstable flames, and the turning point is a saddle-node bifurcation point. For larger values of the Lewis number there is a Hopf bifurcation point on the upper branch of the curve, dividing it into stable and unstable sections. The number and stability of propagating flame solutions can also change as the parameters are varied. For a fixed value of the activation energy parameter, the Lewis number – heat loss parameter plane is divided into several regions by different bifurcation curves according to the number and stability of travelling wave solutions. These regions are the following: Lewis number/heat loss parameter pairs to which there is no flame solutions, parameter pairs to which there is a stable and an unstable planar flame, parameter pairs to which there is only an unstable planar flame and an oscillatory flame or a cellular flame. The bifurcation curves

Pulsating and Hydrodynamic Instabilities at Large Lewis Numbers

The dynamic behavior of freely propagating premixed flames with large Lewis numbers was computationally simulated using a sixth-order central difference scheme and non-reflective boundary conditions. Results in the linear stage of the instability growth show that the growth rate dramatically decreases with increasing Lewis number and that the large activation energy excites the pulsating instab...

The thick flame asymptotic limit and Damköhler’s hypothesis

We derive analytical expressions for the burning rate of a flame propagating in a prescribed steady parallel flow whose scale is much smaller than the laminar flame thickness. In this specific context, the asymptotic results can be viewed as an analytical test of Damköhler’s hypothesis relating to the influence of the small scales in the flow on the flame; the increase in the effective diffusio...

An Analytical Model for Flame Propagation through Moist Lycopodium Particles with Non-unity Lewis Number

In this investigation, the structure of one-dimensional flame propagation in uniform cloud of volatile organic particles has been analyzed in which the structure of flame is divided into three zones. The first zone is preheat zone which is divided into three subzones itself. In first subzone (heating), particle cloud heated until the moisty particles reach to vapor vaporization temperature. In ...

Flame Flashback and Propagation of Premixed Flames near a Wall

The flashback or propagation of premixed flames along the near-wall low-velocity region at the base of a laminar boundary layer of a reactive mixture has been studied numerically. The analysis, carried out using the constant density approximation for an Arrhenius overall reaction, accounts for the effects of the Lewis number of the fuel. The flow field, as seen by an observer moving with the fr...

Flame Propagation in Poiseuille Flow under Adiabatic Conditions

We describe flame propagation in a channel subject to a Poiseuille flow, within the thermo-diffusive approximation and an adiabatic context. The two-dimensional flame fronts addressed may be either assisted or opposed by the flow. The problem is characterized by two parameters, the intensity of the flow u0 and the spatial scale e. The total burning rate and the propagation speed are determined ...
